End of Winter 2013 Term Update

  • by

Hello Dancers

This has been a short term and Easter is racing up, so it is time to give you all the important dates for the end of term and for the beginning of the new term after the break.

The final night of term will be Wednesday 27th March. There will be no classes at all on Thursday 28th March (Maundy Thursday). The final practice session of term will be on Tuesday 26th March.

New Beginners Latin and Ballroom Class

For anyone who has not been to our classes before, please come along to our new beginners class starting at 8:30pm on Thursday 25th April at the Elmgrove Centre. This class will continue at the same time and place until the end of July.

It’s best to come along right from the start but if you can’t make it to the first one or two classes you can catch up.

You can come on your own, with a partner, or in a group. Beginners classes are generally popular so there should be plenty of people to dance with and it is a good way to meet people.

You don’t have to book in advance, just turn up on the day and you pay for each class when you arrive. You only ever pay for the classes you attend.

New Beginners Latin and Ballroom Classes

Thursday 25th April 8:30pm-9:45pm at The Elmgrove Centre (directions)

This is our only New Beginners class before September (which is a long time to wait), so why not give it a try this term. Click the image below to download the flyer.

Sunday Class At St Bonaventure’s Club

If you were a beginner going to classes on Sundays at St Bonaventures or Tuesdays at Cairns Road, you will be an improver after Easter. Your classes will continue on Sundays and Tuesdays, but for the Sunday class there will be some changes on some weeks so please make a note.

On TWO of the weekends we will be forced to hold the Sunday class at The Greenway Centre rather than at St Bonavatures. The class will start a bit earlier because The Greenway Centre closes earlier than St Bonaventures does.

There are a couple of long standing bookings at St Bonaventures which preclude us from having our regular time slot every weekend. These bookings are beyond our control so we have to work around them. Sorry.

Your Sunday Improvers Class schedule is as follows:

The Greenway Centre
3:00 – 4:15pm

Sunday 21st April
St. Bonaventures Club
5:00 – 6:15pm

The Greenway Centre
3:00 – 4:15pm

Sunday 5th May
St. Bonaventures Club
5:00 – 6:15pm

Sunday 12th May
St. Bonaventures Club
5:00 – 6:15pm

Sunday 19th May
St. Bonaventures Club
5:00 – 6:15pm

Sunday 26th May

Please make a note of the times and places for each class, we would hate for you to arrive at St Bons on the wrong week and find you are taking part in a christening party or a set-dancing weekend instead of your dance lesson.

If you have not been to The Greenway Centre before it has a large hall (it’s where we hold our weekend dances) and has a good sized car park and is definitely worth a visit. Please see our venues page for details and directions.

You should also note that the Sunday classes will start back sooner than the other classes so will be a week ahead of the improvers class running in the week. We realise this is not ideal but this is due to the way dates have fallen this year.

Weekend Dances at The Greenway Centre

We’ve been holding the weekend dances at The Greenway Centre for a whole year now, and it has proved to be a very popular venue with plenty of parking, a nice seating area by the bar and a great big dance floor. Thanks to all of you who have come over the year.

The weekend dances at The Greenway Centre after Easter will be a mixture of Friday and Saturday dances. There will be five dances and they are three weeks apart. Please put the dates in your diaries now so you don’t forget them.

Saturday 27th April
Friday 17th May
Saturday 8th June
Friday 28th June
Friday 19th July

Time: 8:30pm – 11pm
Price: £7.50 per person

As the Greenway has a bar with alcoholic and soft drinks at reasonable prices, we ask you not bring your own drinks other than bottle water, and support the centre by patronising the bar.

Spring 2013 Class Timetable

If you are coming to your first class this term, please only come to the “NEW Beginners” class mentioned in the section above, as the ones below are for students with some prior experience and the class would go too quickly for a new student. However if you have danced Latin & Ballroom elsewhere please tell us and we can direct your to the most appropriate classes for you.

Note that if you were a BEGINNER in the January to March term, you are an IMPROVER now in the April to July term.

For almost all of you, your new class will be at the same time and place as your old class, with the exception of the old Thursday class at the Elmgrove. If you were a beginner last term and were going to the Elmgrove Centre class, you are an Improver this term and can join the Improvers on Sunday or Tuesday. The Thursday 8:30pm time slot at the Elmgrove will be our New Beginners class.

Tuesday Practices at the Elmgrove Centre

Our Tuesday night practice sessions at the Elmgrove Centre will start again on Tuesday 23rd April 2013 and continue on Tuesdays throughout the spring term. Admission is £5 per person (£4.50 concs).

Practices are an unstructured evening with no teaching where we play a musical selection for the dances taught in class and you can try what you have learned at your own pace. It’s best to make arrangements with an individual or a group of people from your class rather than just turning up, as it is not like a weekend dance where people mingle.

Practice sessions start at 7:45pm and continue until 9:45pm, however as it is unstructured you can arrive later or leave earlier if you do not want to stay for the whole session.

Practice sessions are very useful for remembering steps and working through any problems and they will help you learn more quickly in class. Like all dancing events they make an enjoyable night out.

Remember, practice doesn’t only make perfect it also makes possible!

Roadworks at Cairns Road

We are sorry for any inconvenience the roadworks on Cairns Road may have caused during the winter term. In theory these should all be finished by the time the new term starts, but anyone coming to the Tuesday classes in the spring term may want to plan to approach from the other side to Kellaway Avenue just in case they over run.

Happy Easter

The winter term got off to a bumpy start with the snow in January, but thanks for sticking with us and we hope you have all enjoyed all the classes, dances and practices this term.

We hope you have a nice Easter and we look forward to seeing you in April.

keep dancing
